When the Notes pane, or the Spreadsheet pane, or one of the other panes disappears and you cannot get it to display again, you can reset the layout to the defaults as if just installed.

Open REM and go to the Tools menu.  Select "Reset Window Layout", then follow the instructions to restart REM.
